The African Financial Markets Initiative (AFMI), an initiative of the African Development Bank (AfDB), respects the privacy rights of those who choose to access this Website (”Users”). It is strongly committed to protecting their privacy. This Privacy Policy applies to the AfDB  website dedicated to this initiative (the “Website”), including any newsletters subscribed to on this Website and information collected offline when a user subscribes to other services offered by AfDB.

Collection and Use of Personal Information

AfDB collects personal information that users voluntarily provide on the website, on third-party websites and applications when subscribing to the AfDB Newsletter, or offline, which may include your name, a postal address, e-mail address. AfDB or a designated service provider collects personal information when users register on the website, request certain information and/or data, submit information and/or data. This information is used to provide users with their requested information and to communicate with them. Consistent with the choice users make when providing personal information, AfDB may use their personal information to provide them with information, send them invitations and promote events and conferences, using various means, including e-mail. Users may instruct AfDB at any time not to use their personal information covered by this Privacy Policy for purposes other than receiving the  Newsletter about AFMI activities (“AFMI Newsletter”) by clicking here. Please note that should a user exercise choice in this manner, the user will continue to receive AFMI Newsletters. The opt-out process will be completed as timeously as possible.

Use of Cookies and Other Electronic Tools

AfDB and its partners may place, view, and/or use "cookies," webserver logs, web beacons, or other electronic tools to collect statistical and other information about the use of the Website and other websites. This information may include information about the IP address of a User’s computer, browser type, language, operating system, mobile device, geo-location data, the state or country from which user accessed the Website, the web pages visited, the date and the time of a visit, and the websites a user visited immediately before and after visiting the Website.

AfDB and its partners may use the information collected for various reasons, either on behalf of AfDB or for the other partners’ own purposes, including research, analysis, to better serve users to the Website, to compile aggregate and anonymous information about usage of the AFMI website and other websites, other statistics, etc. However, if a user has deleted and disabled cookies, these uses will not be possible to the extent they are based on cookie information.

To assist AfDB with the uses described in the Privacy Policy, information collected about the use of the Website or other websites may be combined with personal or other information about a user from other online or offline sources. If a User prefers that we not combine non-personal information that has been collected, through cookies, about the use of the Website or other websites with personal or other information, then users should please delete and disable cookies for each browser, on each computer used to surf the Website.

Most browsers are set to accept cookies by default. Users can set their browsers to disable cookies, or to alert them when cookies are being sent. Likewise, most mobile devices allow users to disable the ability for geo-location information to be collected from their mobile devices. The help function on most browsers and mobile devices contains instructions on how to set browsers to notify Users before accepting cookies, disable cookies entirely, or disable the collection of geo-location data. Users need to set each browser, on each device used to surf the web. Should a User use multiple browsers to surf the web (e.g., Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.), the User should repeat this procedure with each browser. Similarly, should a User connect to the web from multiple devices (e.g., work and home), the User should set each browser on each device. However, should a user disable cookies or refuse to accept a request to place a cookie, it is possible that some parts of the Website may not function properly.

Disclosure of Personal Information and Other Information

AfDB may share personal and other information with its affiliates (including affiliated websites under the common ownership or control of the AfDB) and designated service providers. AfDB may share with other third parties information about its website users, such as the use of the Website or other websites, and the services provided on the Website or other websites, but only on an anonymous and aggregate basis. Consistent with the choice users make when providing personal information, AfDB may also share personal information with sponsors, partners and third party service providers. Users may instruct AfDB at any time not to share their personal information covered by the Privacy Policy with such sponsors, partners and third party service providers by clicking here. Please note that (i) the opt-out process may take some time to complete; and (ii) even after such opt-out process is completed, personal and other information may continue to be shared with AfDB’s affiliates (including affiliated websites under common ownership or control of the AfDB) and designated service providers.

Should a User participate in certain features of the  Website (e.g., sharing news stories of interest, commenting on articles, participating in online debates and online training), any information disclosed voluntarily through the use of these features, becomes available to the public and/or other designated Users.  AfDB is not responsible for information disclosed publicly on the Website, and neither is AfDB’s nor others’ use of such information is subject to the Privacy Policy.

AfDB may also disclose your personal and other information to unaffiliated third parties if we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to: (a) comply with the law or in response to a subpoena, court order, government request, or other legal process; (b)  produce relevant documents or information in connection with litigation, arbitration, mediation, adjudication, government or internal investigations, or other legal or administrative proceedings; (c) protect the interests, rights, safety, or property of AfDB or others; (d) enforce any terms of service on the  Website; and (e)  provide Users of the Website with the data and information requested.

The collection, further use, and/or disclosure of Users’ personal information by sponsors, partners and third party service providers is not the responsibility of  AfDB. Rather, such collection, use, and/or disclosure is governed by the third parties' privacy policies.

Accuracy and Security of Personal Information

Any personal information provided to AfDB is kept on secure servers. AfDB uses reasonable administrative, technical, personnel, and physical measures to (a)  safeguard personal information against loss, theft, unauthorized use, disclosure, or modification; and (b)  ensure the integrity of the personal information. To help protect their privacy, Users are encourage  to maintain the secrecy of the Username and Password set up in connection with the participation in the Website’s services.

Accessing and Updating Your Personal Information

To access, review, rectify, or delete personal information covered by the Privacy Policy, please contact the AfDB Team by clicking here. All requests must include the following information: first name, last name, and e-mail address and "Privacy Policy" in the Subject line. While AfDB will make reasonable efforts to accommodate Users’ request, it also reserves the right to impose certain restrictions and requirements on such access requests, in accordance with the law.

Transfer of Personal Information To Other Countries

Some of the uses and disclosures mentioned in the Privacy Policy may involve the transfer of Users’ personal information to various countries around the world that may have different levels of privacy protection than that in their countries. By submitting personal information, the User consents to such transfers.

Links To Third-Party Websites

AfDB may provide links to third-party websites, including social networking websites. Since AfDB does not control third-party sites and are not responsible for any information Users may provide while on such sites, users are encouraged to read the privacy policies on those websites before providing any information on such sites.
