Questions Fréquemment Posées

What are the African Financial Markets Database (AFMD) and the AFMI DataPortal

The African Financial Markets Database (AFMD) is a comprehensive database that provides updated and complete information on domestic central government marketable debt, with focus on Treasury bills and Treasury bonds. Currently the AFMD covers bond and bill issues for nearly 45 African countries since the year 2000, to the extent that data is available.

Data is collected through a network of Liaison Officers from the Central banks and the Ministries of Finances. Data is also collected in the public domain, especially from Debt Management Offices, stock exchanges, numbering agencies, regulators and financial markets associations, etc. The main data sources are the auction results and official reports published by the official institutions.

Data is validated, regularly cross-checked and compiled by the bank’s statistics Department in joint cooperation with AFMI Team to ensure as far as possible accurate, reconcilable and harmonized information on domestic central government marketable debt all over the continent. Data is then disseminated through the AFMI Dataportal, security by security or on aggregate basis. The disseminated statistics aim to meet the need of policymakers, investors, bankers, researchers and other users.

How to construct Summary Reports

You can create two types of customized reports: summary reports/tables and detail reports/cross country comparable data:

Summary Report:

This kind of reports contains aggregated data grouped by year and/or country. To obtain such reports, follow the steps below:

1. Select in Data by Topic section Macroeconomic indicators or External debt indicators or Local Currency Debt indicators (T Bonds or T-Bills) or Governance indicators

2. Then Select in the Calendar the years, and in the Region the country. You can select only one country at one time.

How to construct Detail Reports/cross country comparable data

Detail Report/cross country comparable data:

This kind of reports contain more details than summary reports and allow comparison between countries over a time period. To obtain such reports, follow the steps below

1. Click on "Data Query"  at the left of the page. A Data Query dialog box opens.

2. Click on the "Select Data Sources" tab and click in the dialog box on Macroeconomic indicators/External Debt Indicators/Local Currency Debt indicators (Treasury bonds) or (Treasury Bills)/Governance indicators;

3. Click on "Select Elements" tab. A dialog box opens on the left:

First select the indicators you want to include in the report, then select the period (years) in the calendar section

Then select the countries in the region section. For LC Debt indicators, it is necessary to select the bonds not the countries otherwise no data will be shown on the screen

And finally select the units in the Unit section;

4. Click on "View results" tab:  You can scroll down/up to see all the results

How to save reports as Excel/PDF Files

Once you get your data table and you may want to save it as Excel/PDF format, you just have to click the button on the top left and then it's done.

How to construct graphs

You can create graphs for each debt indicator and even compare two or more countries:

1. Click first on Local Currency Debt indicators (Treasury Bonds) or Local Currency Debt indicators (Treasury Bills)

2. Then click on the name of one indicator in the table on the right

3. Then you can select the year of comparison (one year at one time), the indicator (one indicator at one time) and the countries (as much as you want)

To get this graph, you can also click on Chart when you select Local Currency Debt indicators (Treasury Bonds) or Local Currency Debt indicators (Treasury Bills). Then follow the steps mentioned above.

More graphs are available on the African Development Bank's DataPortal through the link: http://www.afdb.org/en/knowledge/statistics/data-portal
